Stay True. Addiction Course.

All the suffering, stress and addiction comes from not realizing you already are what you are looking for.

- Jon Kabat-Zinn

Over the years, it has become clear that there is a calling for deeper support on the path of recovery from all dis- ease, dis- harmony and self sabotage. Addiction is not simply substance abuse, but also the addiction to unhealthy thoughts, destructive relationships, sex impulses, shopping, gaming, eating, starving, running away, over working, mental health challenges, cosmetic procedures, gambling and much more. I have come to see that no matter what the addiction there are fundamental connections between the underlying issues that lead to the external manifestation of that addiction. Instead of looking at the symptom, i.e drug abuse, I feel that there is an invitation to look at the deeper healing which is required for the individual and what can be done to assist in overcoming unhealthy patterns. We must endeavour to turn within and address the core, the root of our pain, if we want to see change. We must connect to a deeper sense of purpose and spirit, not to something existential or ‘out there’ but what lies within our own spirit, our pure true essence.

Addiction - an inability to stop doing or using something, especially something harmful.

- Cambridge Dictionary

Themes of the course will be around finding your authentic voice, staying true to who you are, working through past pain to find peace in the present moment and working toward living a life of joy and inspiration from simply being yourself.

What fascinates me about addiction and obsessive behavior is that people would choose an altered state of consciousness that’s toxic and ostensibly destroys most aspects of your normal life, because for a brief moment you feel okay.

Why me as your guide? I have used drugs and alcohol to avoid pain, been to the depths of depression, anxiety, self loathing, body abuse and suicide attempts. I have learned what it was I was looking for and what I needed to feel connected to myself rather than an external source and now I feel called to support those on their way to living authentically, with purpose, connected to the love in their hearts.

At first, addiction is maintained by pleasure, but the intensity of this pleasure gradually diminishes and the addiction is then maintained by the avoidance of pain.

- Frank Tallis

Not all addictions are rooted in abuse or trauma, but I do believe they can all be traced to painful experience. A hurt is at the centre of all addictive behaviours. It is present in the gambler, the Internet addict, the compulsive shopper and the workaholic. The wound may not be as deep and the ache not as excruciating, and it may even be entirely hidden—but it’s there. As we’ll see, the effects of early stress or adverse experiences directly shape both the psychology and the neurobiology of addiction in the brain.

The way forward for the human race is to recognise and protect the fundamental right of sovereignty over consciousness, to throw off the chains of our divisive religious heritage, to seek out forms of spirituality that are truly supportive of liberty and tolerance, to help the human spirit grow rather than wither, and to nurture our innate capacity for love and mutual respect.
